Right off the bat, this means that the lower the level your team is competing at, the lower the technical requirement on your players. Because intrinsic to the lower levels, is more space and time. Even more important: Time and space can be manipulated by player decisions. And how is that achieved? Tactically! Solution. If you can train your players to create more space and time for themselves and teammates, you’ve just lowered the technical requirements. Coaching baby, coaching. And with practice, players can really enjoy the benefits of such skilled and attractive build- up patterns. ![]() He has to patrol three gates at once and, given that the majority of his work is performed with his feet, he cannot use his hands. If it cannot counter, passing back to the keeper resets play – opposition players return to their original positions, and the exercise restarts by building from the back. Why this works: This session works because it helps coach breaking into space when attacking, and covering space when defending. Players are encouraged to create overloads by exploring space, and having three goals to aim at offers the chance to combine width with intelligent running. The threat of the opposition in counter attacking reminds attackers that while considered build- up play is encouraged, they must stay aware of their defensive positions as well. Keep the ball under pressure. Soccer Coaching 101![]() January 2, 2. 01. Different age groups need different levels to practice at – and I know some of you will have teams that are more advanced than others, so here are three different levels of exercise to practice possession soccer. Make use of a simple 2v. In diagram 1 the two white players pass and move around the square while the grey player has to try and win the ball. If he wins the ball he replaces one of the white players and the game goes on. To advance this game tell the white players they can only have 2 touches on the ball before they must pass. Once they have got the basics of the game add more players to make it a 3 v 2 or a 4 v 2. Expand the play so you are using 1. Moving to more advanced exercises you can expand the play further like diagram 2. For this one use 1. Set it up so you have five attackers inside the area. Two more attackers – one on each of the longest sides of the area – can move up and down to support the play. Three defenders inside the area try to win the ball back. They must win it back twice, then one of the three swaps places with an attacker – and the play continues. Move it to a 6v. 6 game. You can then take it a stage further like diagram 3 where we have a 6v. Go back to a square pitch either 3. You need to have a player from each team on each side of the square, with 2 from each side inside the square. The team that starts with the ball must keep it for as long as possible using team mates on the edge of the square. The player who receives the ball on the edge of the square can either pass or run into the square with the ball and the player who passed the ball out has to take his place on the side of the square. The team trying to win the ball can only use the two players in the centre until they win it – players on the edge of the square cannot tackle. Key coaching points. A good first touch on the ball when receiving. Play the ball first time whenever possible. Count the number of passes to make it competitive. Players should use the inside and outside of each foot. Championship against teams who played with one up front and nine men behind the ball – Mowbray remained true to his ideals. Much as he has this last season only to see his team fail. But Celtic have recognized in his team the core of something special, something that will excite the fans and bring more trophys. The words he spoke at the time reminded me of my own experience a couple of seasons ago when I took over an U1. Eventually the team was turned around and I can look back on the first 5 or 6 games when we played well but lost every one in the same way that Mowbray does: “It hasn’t always been easy. There have been times I have been sitting in other managers’ offices having a beer after games and they have been drooling about our style, telling me how great it is and what good footballers I have almost to a sycophantic extent. That is hard to accept, but you don’t change what you do, you just try to become better at it,” said Mowbray. I remember well after losing 2- 1 the manager and his coaches coming over and expressing surprise we had lost considering how well we had played. We hadn’t won a game all season and their words made us even more determined to play the way I was coaching them, and if you cannot retain possession, master the football, attack on the flanks and in expansive fashion, your team will never progress. At West Brom Tony Mobray has introduced a culture right through the club that is based on skills, technique and the ability to hold onto the ball.
